Jordan's Queen Rania is fronting a televised fundraising campaign for the UN children's agency UNICEF that is airing on pan-Arab television stations through the Muslim holy month of Ramazan.
The campaign is aimed at "promoting awareness and raising funds to directly support children in areas of crisis" in Iraq, Darfur and the Palestinian territories, the queen's office said on Saturday.
"The effects of conflict in these regions include increased vulnerability of children to malnutrition, limited access to safe drinking water, unstable living conditions, restricted access to schooling opportunities, lack of adequate health care and, most of all, constant exposure to violent death," it said.
The campaign began airing on Thursday, the first day of Ramazan for most Muslims, on Showtime Arabia, a key regional pay television provider based in Dubai, which includes the MBC and Al-Arabiya channels.
"The children, the least responsible for these conflicts, are paying the highest price," the queen, who is UNICEF's eminent advocate for children, says in a message. "They are our future, they are our best hope, their suffering our worst fear. Each of us can help, and collectively we can make a difference in their lives."
