Beggars from upcountry have 'invaded' Karachi city for the month of Ramazan and the coming Eidul Fitr, reports UPP correspondent. Though the City District Government and the various Town Administrations including specialist the Gulshan Iqbal town administration have taken various steps to curb the beggars in the city, but their number has increased.
Reportedly some 30,000 beggars have arrived in the city form Interior Sindh and various upcountry areas so far and the number would keep increasing according to reports gathered from different places in the city where big populations of beggars are seen herded in the late night hours.
It is also learnt that there are some 35 different Beggary-Mafia who handle their own bands of beggars and distribute different areas to them.
It is estimated that in Karachi alone, the number of beggars swells to over 100,000 by Eid day. Many among the beggars physically fit use band-aids to show physical ailment and earn a sum of over Rs one billion during Ramazan and the Eidul Fitr holidays. Of this, the Mafia contractors take away 40 percent while the beggars are allowed to keep 60 percent of the proceeds. The Government is fully aware of the Beggary-Mafia and has taken several measures but with little effect so far.
