Two managing committee members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) have tendered their resignations during the managing committee meeting held on Saturday. The two members who resigned include Faisal Khalil from Punjabi-speaking community and Shaikh Ahmed Zamir from Urdu-speaking community.
To replace them, the managing committee co-opted Shamim Shamsi from the Urdu-speaking community and Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh from the Punjabi-speaking community. Sources said that Majyd Aziz, Abdullah Zaki and Saqib Naseem had already decided to resign as President, Senior Vice President and Vice President of KCCI.
Now the KCCI general body meeting will be held on September 29, to elect new President, Senior Vice President and Vice President to complete the remaining three-month period of office bearers.
Sources said that Shamim Shamsi from the Urdu-speaking community would contest for the post of President, Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh from Punjabi-speaking Community for Senior Vice President and Haroon Agar from Memon community for Vice President, and they would assume their charge from October 1.
As per unwritten constitution of the chamber, the members elect President, Senior Vice President and Vice President from Urdu, Punjabi and Memon communities on rotation. This year the President will be elected from Urdu-speaking community, Senior Vice President from Punjabi-speaking community and Vice President from Memon communities. Under the new Trade Organisation Ordinance (TOO) and Trade Organisation Rules (TOR), the general election of the KCCI would be held in December or in first week of January 2008.
Sources said the tenure of these new office-bearers would end in next three months when the general elections would be held as per the TOO and TOR. It is also hoped that Shamim Shamsi, Iftikhar Ahmed Shaikh and Haroon Agar would also participate in the general elections for the same posts.
