The National Engineering Services Pakistan (Pvt) Limited (NESPAK) has extended its activities abroad and is now operating in 34 countries where it has performed in an outstanding manner by providing high quality engineering services.
Reviewing the performance and achievements of NESPAK in the last 34 years, Managing Director Karamat Ullah Chaudry said to date NESPAK had undertaken 2,772 projects at home and abroad out of which 2,397 had been completed. "NESPAK is now working on 305 domestic and 70 foreign projects," he added.
Chaudhry said that the first project, which NESPAK undertook as Consulting Engineers in 1973, was the 36 feet finished diameter steel-reinforced Left Bank Irrigation Tunnel at Tarbela Dam Project. It was a difficult and challenging assignment, which Pakistani engineers successfully completed ahead of time much to the astonishment of expatriate consultants and contractors working at Tarbela Dam Project, he said.
This was a launching pad for NESPAK and a feather in its cap, which brought it name, fame and international recognition, he said. With this major break-through NESPAK grew in size and stature and went from strength to strength in the coming years, he added.
Chaudhry said that after 34 years of dedicated service to the nation and other countries in the Middle East, Far East, Central Asia and Africa, NESPAK has emerged as one of the largest and experienced firms of Consulting Engineers in the Region. "As a result of its outstanding services, NESPAK is now known as Ambassador of Pakistan in all these countries," he said.
The NESPAK chief expressed satisfaction that the engineering consultancy profession in Pakistan is now fairly mature and a number of experienced indigenous firms have been established in the private sector in the country. These are capable of doing work of quality and standard which previously was the domain of the expatriate consultants, he stated.
Starting with a professional staff strength of 22 employees 34 years ago, NESPAK now has a staff strength of 3,160 personnel, out of which 1,887 are highly qualified engineers, experienced professionals and para-professionals, he said and added that 240 of them hold MSc and PhD degrees, mostly from well reputed foreign universities.
Referring to the financial health of the company, the NESPAK Chief said that starting with a capital outlay of Rs 1.5 million, the company has paid to the government over Rs 348 million in the form of taxes and dividend up to June 30, 2007. The company's total earning from May 1973 to June 2007 was Rs 17, 876 million and its profit before tax during this period was Rs 1, 513 million.
