The city remained without electricity whole day on Tuesday as technical faults persisted in two units at Korangi thermal power station and one at Bin Qasim power station for the last three days.
Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) failed to remove these faults which caused severe electricity shortage problems at the residential and commercial parts of the city, besides health and academic institutions.
The power supply was also affected after the transmission system of KESC was caught by faults linked to the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (Kanupp) on Monday night. Supply from Kanupp will take at least 72 hours to be restored.
The city is facing shortage of over 300 MW as 80 MW and 150 MW shortages were caused by the failure of two units at the Korangi powerhouse and one at the Bin Qasim while 80 MW shortage was from Kanupp, sources in KESC told Business Recorder.
The KESC administration failed to sort out these faults. Over a dozen feeders tripped and cables were damaged in different parts of the city, which cut off power to a large number of areas.
Protests against power outages also continued in parts of the metropolis. People in localities near Teen Hatti took to the streets and blocked the main road after hours-long power breakdown. They chanted anti-KESC slogan and demanded early restoration of electricity supply. Angry mobs were complaining about electricity fluctuation damaging a large number of electrical appliances.
Residents of several areas of the city including Hassan Square, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Landhi, Korangi, Agrataj, Gulshan Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Lyari, Nazimabad, Saddar, I I Chundrigar Road, North Karachi, Nagan Chowrangi, Nazimabad, FB Area etc, suffered prolonged power breakdowns.
