The government encourages rigging, it's not the local government. This was one of the slogans carried by about 83 women councillors from across the country who demonstrated in front of Islamabad Press Club on Wednesday.
The women councillors from 16 districts were demonstrating in favour of continuation of local government institutions, because they felt threatened after a number of political parties had represented to government to abandon this scheme, created for the first time during Parvez Muharraf's government. The allegation that local government officials rigged the polls in the rural areas, Liaquat Begum, a woman councillor from Dir area in NWFP, told this correspondent.
The government encourages rigging, not the local government system, it's between the nazims and the provincial government, added Tanveer Sultana from Jhang, who had participated in a net-working effort sponsored by Sarwar Bari's Pattan think-tank. 'We will hold convention of all women councillors across the country in March 2008, Sarwar Bari informed Business Recorder.
