A court in eastern India Wednesday sentenced a former parliamentarian and two other politicians to death for the murder of a civil servant 13 years ago in lawless Bihar state, officials said. The sentencing is a landmark as it the first time a politician who has held a seat in the national parliament has been sentenced to die by a court, officials said.
Anand Mohan was ordered to go to the gallows while his wife, Lovely Mohan, another former MP, was given life imprisonment for inciting a mob to murder civil servant G. Krishnaiah in December 1994 in Bihar's Gopalganj district. The couple belong to the Janata Dal (People's Party) which governs Bihar state.
Sessions Judge Ram Krishna Rai also handed down the capital punishment to a former state assembly member and an opposition political leader in connection with Krishnaiah's murder, officials said by telephone from state capital Patna.
