Malaysian share prices closed flat on Wednesday, down 0.1 percent after Wall Street's retreat overnight triggered a bout of consolidation across regional markets, dealers said. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index declined 1.76 points to 1,366.96 on volume of 1.74 billion shares worth 2.74 billion ringgit (806 million dollars).
Losers led gainers 318 to 555 and 284 stocks were unchanged. At the close, the ringgit was quoted at 3.4100/4130 against the dollar. "The profit-taking is not surprising. After the Dow's pullback overnight, I can't see any strong catalysts that could move the markets higher," said Tee Sze Chiah, investment analyst at Aseambankers Research.
Index heavyweights finished the day mostly flat as state-run Telekom Malaysia was unchanged at 10.80 ringgit, Maybank was steady at 11.20 while national power company Tenaga gained 0.10 to 9.75.
