On a short notice from the court, Secretary, Defence, Kamran Rasul, and Interior Secretary Kamal Shah appeared before the Supreme Court on Friday in the missing persons case and assured that they would do their best to recover the remaining missing persons.
Deputy Attorney General Naheeda Mahboob Elahi told the court that 15 more missing persons had been recovered, and 12 of them were released. A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and Justice Sardar Mohammad Raza Khan heard the cases of the missing persons. Relatives of the missing persons and representatives of the human rights organisations were also present in the courtroom.
The Chief Justice directed the Defence Secretary to meet the heads of the ISI and MI and submit a detail report about all the missing persons. He said that the court had the evidence that some of these missing persons were in the custody of Intelligence agencies.
Therefore, it was better for them to release the missing persons, otherwise the court would order registration of criminal cases against government officials. On request of the Federal Secretaries, the court adjourned the case till October 11, 2007.
