Pakistan, citizens, civil society and all other segments are surprised at the way the political development is taking place in the country. They are frustrated at the manner the presidential election has been handled and maneuvered, said some of the representatives of civil society on Sunday, while talking to Business Recorder.
Bushra Naqvi, advocate, a representative of the Rotary Club, said this was a wonderful final of an excellent political farce and how the heavy mandate which was so obvious would be used by the President was showing to the people on September 29.
She said this was very unfortunate that the politicians stood bluntly discredited when people were expecting miracles for an early return of a civilian rule.
Farzana Bari, an activist of the Pattan Organisation, said the result of presidential election was already known to all and sundry as it was expected that only General Pervez Musharraf would clinch victory.
She said the general public was not interested in politics as they knew that it has always been the ruling class and their kith and kin who would continue to dominate the political scene in the foreseeable future. Muazzama Hasnain, advocate, said the slogan of democracy was nothing but a joke as the people knew that whoever came in power, he/she would fetch his personal gains. She termed the NRO a drama being staged for the helpless people.
She said the politicians were backed by the western countries and the opposition's role was also condemnable as they had been just trying to appease the appetite of their own interests. She said the citizens did not like to come out to the streets because they had known very well that 'changing of the government meant a change of face.
