Pakistan secured orders worth around $10 million during the Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair, held in Bangkok from September 18 to 22. According to details available here on Monday, Pakistan''s participation was organised by Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company (PGJDC).
This was the third consecutive year that Pakistan participated in this fair. Earlier, it had participated on 2005 and 2006. Pakistan''s Ambassador in Thailand, Lieutenant General Khateer Hasan Khan (retd), inaugurated Pakistan''s pavilion. The Bangkok Gems and Jewellery Fair has established itself as one of the world''s favourite gem and jewellery destinations of top gem and jewellery professionals, which has been made possible through the efforts of Thailand''s skilled and talented workforce.
Thailand is one of the world''s foremost cutting and trading centres for diamond and coloured gemstones and jewellery, making the Fair an excellent choice for all gem and jewellery needs.
In the assessment of PGJDC, the un-quantifiable benefits of participating in the Fair include, contact with global customers, world-renowned members of various trade related associations, direct contact with international institutions/consultants, visits to various gem and jewellery manufacturing centres, and awareness regarding the latest technology and equipment in the field. These may not be quantified in dollar terms immediately but could be of immense and lasting value in the long run.
Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company is the culmination of efforts put in by the Ministry of Industries, Production and Special Initiatives, Government of Pakistan and the stakeholders of gems and jewellery sector in the country.
The Ministry took the initiative to gather the stakeholders and formed a Strategic Working Group (SWOG), which was assigned to formulate the strategy to develop gems and jewellery sector in Pakistan.
PGJDC is implementing the strategy developed by SWOG. It is a public private partnership to develop the value chain of gems and jewellery sector from mine to market. The company aims to enhance exports through facilitation, technology up-gradation, skill development and marketing/branding. In December, PGJDC would take a delegation of exhibitors to the International Exhibition in Dubai, (Jewellery Collections Dubai).
