The government is all set to provide foolproof security to the former Prime Minister and chairperson Pakistan Peoples Party, Benazir Bhutto on her scheduled return on October 18, after spending 11years in self-exile.
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is much concerned about the security of her chairperson after receiving threats from a Pakistani Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud to target her in reaction to her anti-militants statements during the last couple of months.
Benazir is returning to Pakistan under a deal-cum-understanding with the Musharraf regime most probably orchestrated by the Western powers mainly the United States. Benazir has asked the government to provide her foolproof security and allow her to import a bullet-proof car for protection from a possible lethal attack.
The government has planned to chalk out foolproof security plan in co-ordination with the PPP. Talking to foreign press, Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said that government would extend Benazir Bhutto extra security on her homecoming next week and that it has authorised her to import a special bullet-proof car. "We will provide her security and we expect her representatives to discuss the arrangements with the interior ministry," the minister added.
On the other hand, United States is also concerned about the security of the former Prime Minister in Pakistan under the present uncertain situation and has recently indicated that a foreign company could be hired for the security of PPP's chairperson as enjoyed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, if required.
Britain, another Western power and pro-PPP country, has also reportedly asked MQM chief Altaf Hussain, who is in exile in London for the last many years, not to create any hurdle or security problem for Benazir in Karachi and ensure her smooth landing at the airport.
These countries seem to form a liberal and anti-militant-coalition in Pakistan ahead of 2008 general elections. In addition, these powers also played a significant role in removing legal hurdles in the way of Benazir as a first step to get a Reconciliation Ordinance promulgated by President Pervez Musharraf.
