The Supreme Court here Wednesday directed police officials of Khairpur district to produce on October 18 a person alleged to be in their custody. A four-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, Justice Nawaz Abbasi and Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan heard the case.
Abdul Hameed, resident of Khairpur district, appeared before the court and said that he and his cousin Hafiz Khan Muhammad were picked up by the police in collaboration with intelligence agencies. Former District Police Officer Imran Minhas Yaqoob appeared before the bench and denied the claim.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarfraz representing Ministry of Defence said that the alleged intelligence officers namely Major Iftikhar, Major Zaman and Major Mushtaq were never posted in Khairpur district. Chief Justice asked Advocate General Sindh Khawja Naveed to resolve the matter on urgent basis and ordered District Police Officer (DCO) Imran Minhas to produce the man or face strict action.
In another case the bench directed the respondents to hand over keys of a house owned by Saeeda Khan, a widow, in Sector F-11 by November 10. The complainant told the court that their house had been under the use of the tenant who was not willing to vacate it and was using his influence for the purpose.
She said that despite having a house of her own she along with her widow daughter and son were living in a rented house and facing hardship. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry directed Munir Paracha, counsel for the respondent, to get the house vacated within one month and deposit keys of the premises with the Registrar of the Supreme Court.
