Karachi city police has drawn a comprehensive plan to deal with the law and order situation during Eid festivals, it is learnt. The Sindh IGP has directed all police officers in Karachi, as well as in the interior of Sindh, to be extremely watchful of criminal activities.
Apprehension has been shown that the fallout of army action on Pak-Afghan border may be felt in Karachi, as suicide bombers and religious extremists have been reported to avenge the killings of their colleagues.
Police pickets are being posted outside mosques, Imambargahs and other open places where Eid prayers would be held. Mosque committees, wherever inactive, are being activated; private guards are being equipped with fresh ammunition and weapons in working condition. Each town in Karachi has been asked to mobilise volunteers to keep an eye on potential miscreants.
On the basis of successful utilisation of volunteers to manage vehicular traffic on main roads where traffic jams had made life of common man miserable, the town committees have planned to post groups of volunteers at major shopping areas, busy road intersections, outside mosques and prayer grounds.
The police, according to instructions, would remain available to the volunteers to meet emergencies. The City District Government has instructed its sanitary contractors to keep the city clean and make sure that their non-Muslim staff is present on duty during Eid-ul-Fitr. Karachi Water and Sewerage Board would ensure uninterrupted water supply during four days of Eid holiday.
