A 10-member bench of the Supreme Court will resume hearing on Wednesday in a set of identical constitutional petitions challenging acceptance of President General Pervez Musharraf's nomination papers by the Election Commission to contest the Presidential election for another term.
The comprises Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday, Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi, Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar, Justice M Javed Buttar, Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed, Justice Chaudhry Ijaz Ahmed, Justice Syed Jamshed Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani.
On September 28 the Court had dismissed the petitions against holding of two offices by President General Musharraf on technical grounds, giving a legal boost to General Musharraf to contest the Presidential election, in uniform, for the second term, which he has contested.
The court has to rule whether an outgoing electoral college may lawfully elect a President for the next five-year term. The petitions challenging the holding of dual offices by President General Pervez Musharraf, his candidacy in the forthcoming presidential election for next term and 17th Constitutional Amendment have been filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Qazi Hussain Ahmad, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan, Chief of Communist Party Engineer Jamil Ahmad Malik, Pakistan Lawyers' Forum and a senior ex-Pathologist of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Dr Anwar-ul-Haque. Later review petitions were also filed.
