Pakistan People's Party on Thursday said that it faces threat from the anti-democratic forces that are against restoration of true democracy, but not any religious group.
Addressing a news conference here at the party media secretariat, the PPP Secretary General Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said that some so-called politicians are afraid of PPP and its leader Benazir Bhutto's growing popularity that's why they are engaged in her media trial and character assassination.
Without naming any individual, he warned of strong reaction to those who are engaged in levelling allegations against Benazir Bhutto and PPP after what he claimed her unprecedented reception by over three million workers in Karachi on her return on October 18.
He was of the view that these people badly failed to prove anything wrong against PPP chairperson for the last 11 years despite spending a lot of money and time. The PPP leader said that such elements are in minority and want to derail the democracy and also sabotage the national reconciliation process. Raja also sought peoples' help to discard such politicians by rejecting in elections.
He demanded of the government to form an independent inquiry committee comprising foreign experts to unearth the elements behind the October 18 bomb blasts in Karachi. Otherwise, he said, there would be a blame-game after the inquiry of this major tragedy as the government was confusing the matter by issuing contradictory statements regarding the blasts.
He further said that PPP feels much insecure after this horrible tragedy whereas the life of its chairperson is at risk, which needs extraordinary security.
The PPP leader also rejected the government plan to ban the public rallies during election campaign, saying that politicians could not be stopped from meeting their workers. Pervaiz also blamed the government for using Pakistan Television for character assassination of PPP leadership and demanded to immediately stop it.
