Promotion of higher education and improving the standard of research through collaboration of Punjab government and Higher Education Commission (HEC) is the first and foremost preference of the government. This was stated by Punjab Governor and Chancellor of Punjab University Khalid Maqbool during a briefing on Punjab University mega projects here on Friday.
The Governor was briefed in details about the ongoing academic and research projects of the University. He was also informed that Higher Education Commission has approved Rs 7 billion funds for infrastructure projects of 46 departments, and projects worth Rs 5 billion have been started and 80 percent work has been completed.
The Governor said the government was taking all steps to improve the standard of education in the universities and it had provided sufficient funds for the purpose. 'Our youth possesses much talent and the government is establishing new setups in the universities by providing them higher education opportunities so that they can play their vital role in national development', he said.
He added that the government was establishing universities' sub-campuses in other cities to provide education to students at their doorsteps. In this information technology era, it is very necessary to make the university libraries computerised and online," he said, adding that it was his wish that university teachers must be provided subsidy to purchase personal computers.
He expressed satisfaction on the scientific education and facilities being provided for its promotion in the university and asked the administration to take measures to make it better.
Later, he visited Punjab University Institute of Quality and Technology Management (IQTM). Director, Institute, Dr Niaz Ahmad briefed the Governor about various ongoing programmes of the institute. He said that it is the only institute in the country for quality management education. He said at present four programmes are being conducted 500 students are getting education here.
The Governor visited various sections of the institute including computer lab and library and questioned the students about the standard of education and problems being faced by them. The students appreciated the standard and facilities being provided to them.
Later, he visited Department of Mycology and Plant Pathology (MPPL). Chairperson of the Department, Dr Rukhsana Bajwa, briefed the Governor about the programmes and research being carried on at the department. The Governor also visited the under-construction work of new departments, and directed to complete them in time.
