A British army regiment has signed a one million pound ($2.05 million) record deal with Universal Music, a spokesman for the Pipes and Drums of the unit, the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, said on Sunday.
Recorded between tours of duty in Iraq, the album is a compilation of traditional Scottish tunes and includes cover versions of Paul McCartney's "Mull Of Kintyre", and "Sailing", made famous by Rod Stewart.
"The pipes are an integral part of our regiment, and we take huge pride in our music," said Pipe Major Derek Potter. "We're very excited to be able to share our music with the world." Military piping originated in the 18th century as a way of instilling confidence in soldiers in battle and recruiting new troops.
"This is a once in a lifetime album," said Dickon Stainer, managing director of Universal Classics and Jazz. "They're a credit to their country and to the musical world."
The record was produced by Jon Cohen, who has worked with The Back Street Boys, Vanessa Mae and the Sugababes, and the regiment donated their royalties to military charities.
