Aitzaz Ahsan backed by the Professional Group won the Supreme Court Bar Association presidency for 2007-08 when he defeated his rival candidate Barrister Zafarrullah by 864 votes. The official result will be announced on October 31.
After Sindh, this year presidency rotates towards Punjab where Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan was up against his counterpart and Watan Party head, Zafarullah Khan who last year won a case against the Pakistan Steel privatisation and received only 175 votes.
Aitzaz fielded by the Professional Group had a strong backing from Hamid Khan, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Tariq Mahmood, Kazim Khan, Ahmad Awais and Muhammad Ramzan Chaudhary. After the unofficial result, Aitzaz vowed to continue the lawyers' struggle for the rule of law and true democracy. He said his victory meant a defeat to President Pervez Musharraf and a rejection of his policies by the legal fraternity.
Aitzaz said the lawyers' unity was in tact to defeat anti-constitutional policies of the rulers. His success, he said, has set a new direction for the country. He vowed to live up to the expectations of the community and the people. A large number of lawyers congratulated Aitzaz on his victory.
