Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Muslim League Chief and former AJK Prime Minister Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry on Monday emphasised the need for launching an aggressive diplomatic campaign at international fora to boost global pressure for early peaceful resolution of Kashmir issue in line with the aspirations of people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a public congregation at Chatroh in Dadayal sub-division of Mirpur district on Monday, the Kashmiri leader called upon the freedom and human rights loving nations of the world including the United Nations to perform their due role to get the internationally-acknowledged Kashmir dispute resolved without further loss of time.
He continued that at present, when dialogue process between Pakistan and India is moving forward, there was an urgent need to launch an aggressive effort to get attention of the world community for the early peaceful settlement of this conflict.
Sultan appreciated measures encouraging people-to-people contact across the Line of Control (LoC) and hoped that these provide an opportunity to Kashmiri leadership from either side of the LoC to evolve a joint strategy encouraging the early peaceful resolution of Kashmir conflict. He however declared that the sanctity of the LoC should be maintained in all respect.
Highlighting his recent successful tours to various foreign countries including the Britain, Canada and United States, he asserted that being a Kashmiri, he always tried to fulfil his responsibility to apprise world leaders about the latest developments regarding Kashmir dispute.
Sultan said that through stringent diplomatic efforts to muster sympathies of the world community for early peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, the freedom and peace loving nations could be persuaded for performing their mediatory role for the peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue.
Sultan Mahmood said that during his recent visit abroad, he held meetings with the heads of the foreign missions of the touring countries and apprised them of the urgency of the peaceful resolution of Kashmir conflict.
Sultan revealed that Kashmir Committees, comprising like-minded parliamentarians in the Parliaments of various European countries would be constituted in the near future, he said. The UN Secretary General is making all out efforts for the settlement of Kashmir issue, he added.
He revealed that Kashmir Committee has already been set up in Parliament of Wales - since the response of the Speaker and Members of that Parliament had always been very positive and encouraging. He further said that the Kashmir Committee has also been reconstituted in European Union Parliament and now its vice-chairman has been changed.
He said that Kashmir committee in House of Commons in the United Kingdom has been reconstituted. He said that world community was required to be apprised of the Indian negative posture vis-a-vis escape from settlement of Kashmir issue. India on one hand was striving hard to get permanent place in UN Security Council but on the other hand the its leadership was constantly depriving Jammu and Kashmir people of their birth right of self-determination committed by the international community since over last 59 years.
Barrister Sultan Mahmood said presently there are only two Kashmiri and Pakistani members of House of Common, lower house of the British Parliament. He pointed out that over 25 members could be elected from heavy Muslim populous constituencies.
