Reports about military operation in Swat are quite disturbing in more than one respects. The caretaker Provincial Government of NWFP has deployed a large number of paramilitary and police personnel in the troubled district of Swat to what has been described as establishing the writ in some 59 villages by curbing militancy which is gradually growing in the area.
These reports are disturbing in the sense that Swat has suddenly appeared to be a troubled district and there have been no previous reports of militancy and extremism gaining ground in areas such as North Waziristan and other tribal areas.
It will not be out of place to mention here that Swat is one of the attractions both for domestic and foreign tourists and as such the operation against a handful of militants and extremists should be carried out in a swift manner within minimum time so that the inflow of the local and foreign tourists is not affected adversely while the writ of the government is firmly established.
The NWFP Governor and the Caretaker Chief Minister have stated that the militants are in small minority in Swat area. If this is so then concerted efforts should be made to mobilise the local elders, support in the operation as every law abiding citizen wants to live in peace, tranquillity and harmony. Tourism attraction of Swat should not be allowed to be damaged in any manner at all cost while militancy is curbed.
