A meeting to review the Higher Education Commission's (HEC) funded projects was held with Vice-Chancellor, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Engr Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani in Chair here on Wednesday. The progress of developmental projects of NWFP UET and its satellite campuses were thoroughly discussed.
Giving details about UET mega project "Establishment of Jalozai Campus" costing Rs 6.65 billion, the Director Finance and Planning Muhammad Sarwar Khan said that development work has started and the project would likely to be completed within the stipulated time period as a large number of scholars have applied for 200 Ph.D scholarships in US and Bangkok universities and will be scrutinised for selection.
During the meeting the VC directed to construct a boundary wall to control the encroachments into the campus. The meeting discussed the progress of other on-going projects worth of Rs 2.2 billion. Regarding "Institute of Urban Infrastructure Planning", (Rs 174.164 million), aimed to address the problems of infrastructure and environmental degradation in the cities of Pakistan, it was sais that four scholars are pursuing PhD programme in Canada and UK.
Regarding "Strengthening of Peshawar Campus", it was told that twenty-two faculty members have been sent abroad for pursuing PhD in different engineering disciplines. The VC directed project directors to closely monitor the daily reports of all the projects so as to meet the project's timeline.
The "Institute of Mechatronics Engineering," which is aimed to produce graduate engineers in the field of Mechatronics is one of its kind in NWFP, it was informed that trained faculty has returned after completing MS in Mechatroncis from Canada and the department will be ready to shift its classes to the institution by February 2008. All the necessary state-of-the art equipment will installed in the institution.
Regarding "Strengthening of Existing Engineering Centre" which is aimed to make significant contribution in the reconstruction of earthquake hit areas and to make Pakistan safe from further disasters, EEC has planned to buy the Asia's biggest shake table in consultation with the foreign experts from US.
In this regard UET recently invited foreign experts from US to brief the faculty about salient features and significance of the equipment. Other projects also discussed, including construction of girls and boys hostels, foreign faculty hostel, strengthening of satellite campuses, gemstone centre and continuing education centre.-PR
