Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Friday said the government was committed to strengthening democratic process and would take all measures to ensure conducive political atmosphere in the run-up to the general election.
He was talking to Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Speaker National Assembly, Chaudhry Amir Hussain, Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid and Chief Whip Nasrullah Dareshak. The Prime Minister said all political parties need to focus on finalisation and implementation of the code of ethics so that the political process continues and leads to a free, fair, transparent and peaceful election.
The Prime Minister said PML and its allied parties were engaged in political consultations and dialogue within the coalition as well as with other political parties to develop consensus on a code of conduct for the upcoming election. An understanding in this regard would be in the interest of democracy, he added.
The Prime Minister said continuation of reform agenda and policies would be the manifesto of the PML and its allies with specific focus on further extending basic facilities to every nook and corner of the country.
The objective of the coalition was to further improve the standard of living of the common man to the level of his contentment, he added. Shaukat Aziz said that PML has the best of candidates for every constituency and would contest the forthcoming election with the confidence and determination to obtain a clear mandate.
The meeting discussed PML's election strategy and organisational matters across the country. The meeting also stressed that the democratic process underway must not be disturbed at any cost and the transition of power through ballot box must be ensured in a peaceful manner. Shujaat Hussain said the PML was geared for the general election and said that next week Parliamentary Board will be formed to award party tickets for National and Provincial Assembly seats in all parts of the country.
