Rigged rickshaw, taxi meters: traffic police ignore directives of transport department

Traffic Police and Capital City Police, Karachi, have failed to enforce the directives of Sindh Transport Department to install fare meters in taxis and rickshaws plying on the city roads.
Sindh Transport Department sent an official reminder to Deputy Inspector General (Traffic), Karachi, Wajid Durrani, in August to implement the directives issued in this regard, sources in Sindh Home Department told Business Recorder here on Saturday.
The sources said that Transport Department had also approached the Home Department to issue directives to Traffic Police for compulsory replacement of faulty fare indicators. The sources said a reminder was sent to the DIG, Traffic, following the rising number of complaints that the taxi and rickshaw drivers were fleecing the helpless passengers.
It may be mentioned that there are over 50,000 rickshaws plying in the metropolis, besides 8,000 to 10,000 taxis. Keeping these complaints in view and directives of higher officials, the Transport Department had sent the reminder to Karachi Traffic Police, asking them to launch a campaign to make sure that installation of fare meters in rickshaws and taxis was carried out.
An official of Traffic police said that traffic personnel would launch an extensive campaign against the taxis and rickshaws, flouting the traffic rules and regulations soon after the directives of the DIG, Traffic.
