Members of Convention on Certain Convention Weapons (CCW) on Friday endorsed nomination of ambassador Masood Khan, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, as candidate of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) as President of the 2008 Meeting of the States Parties of the Convention.
The Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons was adopted in 1980. The Convention contains five Protocols regulating the use of various conventional weapons such as landmines, body traps, incendiary weapons, laser weapons during a conflict and explosive remanents of war in the post-conflict phase.
The CCW and its Protocols have established a legal disarmament framework, which harmonise the humanitarian requirements under the international humanitarian law and security compulsions.
Ambassador Masood Khan, speaking at the conclusion of the annual meeting of States Parties said that Pakistan was fully committed to the CCW framework and has fulfilled its obligations in accordance with the provisions of the Convention and its protocols.
