World Performing Arts Festival 2007, organised by the Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop, has opened here on Tuesday, which has brought together artists from all over the world to celebrate their art.
While addressing a selective gathering, Usman Peerzada said artists from 21 countries including Norway, UK, India and Afghanistan are taking part in the Festival. He commended the foreign artists to travel to Pakistan against the advice of their respective governments and it is indeed courageous of them.
"Initially, artists from 40 countries had committed to participate in the Festival, but due to prevailing political situation in the country, many dropped out," he added.
He hoped that foreign artist performing in the festival would take a good image of the country and spread a positive message in their respective countries. He appreciated the Norwegian government for their support for the festival that has been a regular feature since 1992 and also praised the Norwegian company Telenor that was the official sponsor of the event.
Telenor Vice President Irfan Wahab also spoke on the occasion. Later, both the Pakistani and foreign artists performed with the delight of the audience.
The 11-day festival would be formally open for the general public on November 22 and ends on December 2. Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid Maqbool (Retd) would be the chief guest on the first day.
