The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (NEC) has approved Rs 5.93 billion for the mega project announced by President General Pervez Musharraf for the University of Engineering & Technology (UET) Lahore, Faisalabad, Kala Shah Kaku and Gujranwala campuses.
Governor Punjab Lieutenant General (Retd) Khalid Maqbool disclosed this during his visit to the University of Engineering & Technology (UET). The governor presided over a seminar in the university in which action plan was evolved for the mega project.
The amount would be utilised, he said, for setting up of six specialised centres, including Energy Technologies Development Centre, Nano Technologies Development Centre and Bio-Medical Engineering Research Centre in UET Main Campus Lahore, Innovation Technologies Development Center, Continuing Engineering Education & Training Centers at Kala Shah Kaku and Center for Advancement of Textile Technology at Faisalabad.
He also said under this mega project already existing 32 section of the UET Lahore would be strengthened and three each new departments would be introduced in Kala Shah Kaku, Engineering University Faisalabad Campus and Rachna College of Engineering & Technology Gujranwala.
After completion of mega project, the total enrolment of UET Lahore would increase from eight thousand to 15 thousand while the number of faculty members would also be enhanced from 458 to 828 while 274 university teachers would be sent abroad for PhD on government expense to meet with international standards.
Expressing his views he said that the government is providing training in universities at the cost of only one thousand dollar in four years which can not be obtained from USA or UK.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor of the UET, Lieutenant General (Retd) Muhammad Akram Khan, while addressing the seminar said that the credit for allocation of one percent of Grand Domestic Production for higher education goes to President Pervez Musharraf and due to his visionary policies the budget of UET has been enhanced from Rs 300 million to Rs 7 billion.
Lauding the role of Punjab government he said that the provincial government gave special grant of Rs 325 million for UET Lahore, 209 acres of land for Faisalabad Campus and provided seven acre government land for construction of link road to Kala Shah Kaku University Campus.
Later, the governor visited various laboratories of UET and inspected Synthesis Gas Generation Project in Mass Transfer Laboratory completed with the cooperation of Higher Education Commission and checked Compressible Flow Bench installed in Fluid Flow Lab of Chemical Engineering Section of the University.
