The Pakistan Academy of Letters has doubled the amount for all nine annual awards to Rs 100,000, given by the organisation. The cash prize now would be for each category such as Dr Allama Iqbal (best book in Urdu poetry), Bab-I-Urdu Abdul Haq (best book of Urdu prose), Syed Waris Shah (best Punjabi book), Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (best in Sindhi language).
Khsuh Hal Khan (best in Pushto), Mast Tawakkali (best book in Baloch language), Khwaja Ghulam Fareed (Saraiki's best book), Taj Muhammad Tajal (Brahvi) and Pitras Bukhari award for the best work in a year for writing in English by Pak writers.
The amount of the award has been doubled to Rs 100,000 for each award. In 2001, the cash money for the award was raised to Rs 50,000. This year, it has been doubled again.
In addition, PAL has also instituted two new awards for the best book in Hindko language as well as one award for best translation from a Pakistani language to another. Iftikhar Arif, the PAL chief, announcing the increased amount, said his organisation always aspired to do the best for Pakistani writers.
