Authorities are unlikely to arrest former premier Nawaz Sharif on outstanding graft charges following his return from exile, the caretaker interior minister said on Monday.
Sharif still officially faces corruption cases stemming from his two terms in power in the 1990s before he was toppled by President Pervez Musharraf Saudi Arabia on Sunday to a triumphant reception, would likely remain free.
"I do not think so. He had gone away with some agreement with the Saudi government and has come back with some understanding or agreement with the same government," Khan told a private TV channel when asked if Sharif faced jail.
"Since he is here since yesterday and free, I do not think he would be apprehended," he added. Officials have, however, indicated that Sharif will be barred from standing in general elections on January 8 because of convictions for graft and hijacking after his ouster by Musharraf.
