The Indus River System Authority (Irsa) is likely to supply 1200 cusecs additional water to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) for 150 mgd K-IV water project shortly, it is learnt.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that KWSB had sent a proposal to Irsa for increasing Karachi water quota for the project and the Authority has now agreed to supply additional 1200 cusecs water for the K-IV project. Irsa had earlier refused to provide this quantity and water quota had ended with the completion of K-III water project of 100 mgd.
The current shortage of water can be overcome by this additional supply of water from Irsa, sources said. Officials said that water requirement of Karachi has exceeded 1258 cusecs and demand is still rising. According to KWSB, water demand might shoot up to 1458 cusecs in the next three years and might become a real threat for Karachiites unless additional water supply is provided.
The K-IV project will help in reducing water shortage. "The establishment of K-IV water project will meet the water demand, which is believed to go up to about 100 to 150 mgd in the coming years," sources said.
