The federal government has chalked out a policy to facilitate textile sector with aim to enhance exports of high value added products besides generating jobs opportunities for people.
Sources in Directorate of Labour Sindh told Business Recorder here on Thursday that Federal Policy and Planning Cell has decided to facilitate textile sector by providing skilled workforce, which would help sector to accelerate the export of high value added products.
Directives from Islamabad will be dispatched soon to facilitate the industry by trained workforce to achieve dominant position in the export of readymade garments globally, they added. At present low value added textile products are being exported, which causes huge losses to national exchequer instead of earning foreign exchange and also creates negative impact on exports.
Despite the importance of textile sector for the growth of country's economy, neither Pakistani workforce is being trained nor diversified skills are being imparted by adopting modern technological processes, they said.
This sector is dominated by the traditional products, which are being manufactured through outdated technology, therefore value addition is very minimum and benefits for workforce are far less than industry's potential, they added.
"Value added cannot be increased unless raw material to be exported as garments products as it is being done by China at high value addition. Pakistan is exporting more than 85 percent cotton without any processing at a low unit price", they apprised.
"The most promising area for employment generation in textile sector is the readymade garment with huge global market and rising annual share as well. The exports can be maximised by moving up to the value added chain both readymade garments and fabric in textiles sector".
They said that higher productivity and product quality was directly linked with the technical and vocational competence of the workforce and stressed the Technical Education Vocational Training Authority (Tevta) to increase its training programme for textile sector. They apprised that creation of technology upgradation funds had been proposed, which should exclusively be focussed on the 'Textile Industry'.
