Pro-democracy candidate Chan wins key Hong Kong vote

Leading pro-democracy candidate Anson Chan won a landmark by-election in Hong Kong Monday, giving a huge boost to the campaign for universal suffrage in the southern Chinese territory. Chan won 175,874 votes against her key pro-Beijing rival Regina Ip, who secured 137,550, the returning officer said following Sunday's election.
Although the vote only secured a seat in Hong Kong's often powerless Legislative Council, it was seen as the biggest test for the level of support for democracy here since Britain handed the territory back to China in 1997.
