Former minister for parliamentary affairs, Dr Sher Afgan Niazi said on Monday that opposition parties, being unable to find contesting candidates, are levelling baseless allegations against the constitutional institutions like the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
In a telephonic interview to PTV, Sher Afgan said that EC is working in line with Constitution and those who doubt its role and status, are mistaken. He said those having evidence about any involvement of government functionaries in the election process should approach the appropriate forum rather than making hue and cry through media.
Niazi said the caretaker government is in place and the process is moving ahead according to law and Constitution adding the contesting parties should focus on their election campaign. He said the situation on ground is that major political parties like PPP and PML-N have failed to field their candidates in large number of constituencies.
In its home district the PPP was unable to find its candidates, Niazi said. He disagreed with PPP's demand regarding suspension of local bodies during the election saying it will hamper the progress on ongoing development projects to the disadvantage of country and its people.
Niazi said such demands are being made by the political parties in frustration because they have not done homework for the election. He was of the firm opinion that PML-Q would form its governments in centre as well as in the provinces because it will secure majority in the next election due to its past performance.
