The National University of Science and Technology, University of Karachi and Quaid-i-Azam University have been included in the top 600 varsities of the world.
According to the Higher Education Times Supplement UK, National University of Science and Technology is ranked at 470, University of Karachi at 560 and Quaid-i-Azam University at 564 position respectively in top 1000 universities of the world.
The parameters used for ranking in the Times Higher Education Supplement (Thes) included opinion of research-active academics, faculty, recruiter's reviews faculty to student ratio, international student score and international faculty score or percentage of foreign staff.
Earlier, both public and private universities of Pakistan had no representation in international ranking. But since the establishment of Higher Education Commission (HEC), things have changed.
It is due to the efforts made by the HEC that Pakistan is among a few countries of the world where public and private sector universities have access to 40,000 e-books and 23,000 electronic journals. The HEC has also launched scholarship programmes at MPhil, PhD and Postdoctoral levels for producing high quality manpower to strengthen the institutions and the industry.
With academic excellence the HEC has gradually changed the landscape of higher education sector. The reforms introduced by HEC in universities are admired internationally as 'silent revolution'. After 10 to 15 years of sustained effort and support to the higher education sector, Pakistani universities can be contained in top 100 universities of the world.
