The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has aired concern over the sudden suspension of the gas supply to over 200 steel mills and demanded that the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited to restore gas to them.
LCCI President Shahid Hassan Sheikh, Senior Vice President Yaqoob Tahir Izhar and Vice President Mubasher Sheikh said the suspension had left thousands of workers idle, causing a huge production loss to these mills and millions of rupees per day to the exchequer. They said the steel production loss might halt work on ongoing construction projects, damaging the economy.
LCCI office bearers said the suspension without prior intimation to the industrial units was beyond anybody's perception, particularly at a time when everybody knew the consumption of gas in the winter season always went up because of its huge domestic use.
They said the government should focus on increasing their gas production since Pakistan had rich gas resources measuring up to 764.6 billion cubic meters against the consumption of 29 billion cubic meters.
