Punjab Governor Khalid Maqbool addressing a function on the "Anti-Corruption Day" here on Thursday said a strong bureaucracy was essential to fight this menace in the country.
He said the new machine passport, documentation and computerisation of revenue record were the measures that had resulted in lowering of corruption in the country. He said nation should stand steadfast in ranks to fight against corruption in the country.
He particularly appreciated National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for its efforts to curb corruption at various levels. Punjab Governor told of establishing of Criminology Department in Punjab University where post graduate and diploma classes were being taught, he added.
He also emphasised upon media to play its role to fight against corruption in the country.
NAB Director Farooq Hameed Khan said his organisation had recovered Rs 206 billion in the country through its operations since its inception in 1999.He told that NAB had during the period sent 1082 references to Accountability courts out of 2089 referenced filed with it.
He said with 702 convictions to people involved in corruption NAB conviction ratio was 67.8 percent. He added that at Punjab level out of 84 references 27 had been decided. He said NAB had distributed Rs 13 billion amongst sufferers of co-operative scam in Punjab .A number of people from different walks of life were present on the occasion.
