Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that city's blocked and difficult to access roads have been opened after their reconstruction at a cost of Rs 3.5 billion.
Kamal said that new openings are being constructed in different areas including Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Scheme-33, Ahsanabad, Maymarabad, New Karachi and Surjani Town after removal of bushes and encroachments and construction of 48 feet wide roads are underway which will be completed before December 31. He was talking to media during his visit to review work on the ongoing development projects in different areas of the city.
The Nazim pointed out that previously commuters had no access to these thoroughfares and had to walk upto 30 kms, but now with the construction of new roads the distance has been reduced to just 3 kms.
He said Malir and Airport have been linked with Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Scheme 33 while Manghopir Road is being linked with Super highway via Surjani and Ahsanabad. He informed that beautiful and high quality roads have been constructed in Gulistan-e-Jauhar at a cost of Rs 550 million and now street lights are being installed at a cost of Rs 50 million and all these works, he added would be completed in few weeks.
He said Gulistan-e-Jauhar had always been subjected to injustice and vast majority of its residents had to face many problems like water supply, sewerage and road infrastructure. The Haq Parast leadership, however, in a very short period initiated rupees one billion worth development works in different sectors of Gulistan-e-Jauhar which included laying of water and sewerage lines costing Rs 200 million and now construction of roads were underway, the Nazim added.
During visit of Scheme-33, City Nazim said that planning for this area was done 30 to 35 years ago but due to sheer negligence and indifference more than 65 private societies could not provide housing facilities to their members.
Kamal informed that construction of a major thoroughfare from Abul Hasan Ispahani Road to New Subzi Mandi is also underway while repairing of roads and installation of street lights in Scheme-33 was also in full swing at a cost of over Rs 400 million.
