The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) NWFP has recovered a huge amount of Rs 1.80 billion during the period from June 2000 to 20007 through convictions, plea bargains, voluntary returns and other means of recovery in the province.
This was disclosed by Director General (NAB) NWFP, Air Vice Marshal Tahir Rafique Butt in a press briefing on the eve of International Anti-Corruption Day here in Media Centre of the Directorate of Information on Friday. He was also flanked by Chief Secretary NWFP Sahibzada Riaz Noor. The anti-graft agency, he said besides enforcement was now also focusing on the prevention and awareness against the menace of corruption.
The major share in the amount recovered by the Frontier chapter of the agency, he said was Rs 778 million pitched through convictions and fines by the accountability courts. The other recovery of Rs 294.125 million had been made through Swabi Scarp, forest scam, primary education project, pension scam and irrigation department, he added.
Similarly, Rs 558.70 million have been recovered through plea bargain and Rs 173 million as voluntary returns raising the toll in head of money-levied through to Rs 732.38 million. He said that NAB NWFP chapter has unearthed the forest scam saving the forest of the province from the destruction after arresting officers involved in the unlawful and illegal cutting of the forests.
He said that the bureau was working with Peshawar Electricity Supply Company (Pesco) for bringing transparency in the operation of the company. In this connection, he added that one-window operation would be launched shortly to ensure both commercial and domestic connections within a short period of one-week to the consumers.
Speaking on the occasion Chief Secretary NWFP Sahibzada Riaz Noor said that the government had prepared a plan to rationalise the financial system of Fata. In this regard, he added a proposal had already been forwarded to the Governor of the province.
"The system would prepare procedure for the budgeting, codification and would ensure annual audit system to be presented to the governor," he said. After getting final approval, the system would be conveyed to all political agents of the tribal region and civil secretariat Fata for implementation, he added.
