Ambassador of Tunisia, Zouhaier Dhaouadi has said that his country wants to strengthen its trade and economic relations with Muslim countries in general and Pakistan in particular.
Speaking at a meeting of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) on Monday, he said that Tunisia enjoyed best cordial relations with Pakistan but two-way trade did not reflect the same, which he added is around meager $5 million.
He said that business community of both the countries should visit each other's country in order to explore the existing trade opportunities available between them. He informed that under agreement with European countries Tunisia was establishing a free trade zone by 2008. Tunisia is linked by preferential trade agreements with Maghreb and Arab countries besides bilateral arraignments have been concluded with Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Libya, he added.
The ambassador said that Pakistan was geographically well located and could provide facility to Tunisian companies to export their products to other Asian countries.
He emphasised the need for direct trade avoiding import via third country. He said that Pakistani rice is very popular in Tunisia and its export could be increased considerably with little efforts. Welcoming the guests, President KCCI Shamim Ahmed Shamsi invited Tunisian business community to participate in KCCI annual exhibition scheduled to be held in June.
