Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami Qazi Hussain Ahmed has said it is never fruitful to contest the elections under the present government's set up and added that people who are contesting them are living in a fool's paradise.
In a speech to Lahore Bar Association members, Qazi accused Mian Nawaz and Benazir Bhutto of deceiving the people of Pakistan, saying, "They are not fair with the nation and that they are power hungry and want to contest the elections only for the sack of the power corridor."
Qazi said lawyers were fighting for the revival of the Constitution, the rule of law, independence of judiciary. Qazi said that All Party Democratic Movement (APDM) would support them till they gained their goals.
He said the lawyers should obtain the support of the deposed judges and move with them in every party of Pakistan to approach the people of Pakistan to join their struggle. He said the lawyers were in their second phase of struggle with the APDM backing.
He went on to say they would never leave the lawyers in the lurch and then he diverted his attention to President Pervez Musharraf, accusing him of working on the American agenda under which Waziristan would be converted into an American colony.
"We are struggling for a welfare and Islamic democratic state with the independence of the judiciary and hence decided not to contest the elections in the absence of the judiciary," he said. He said they believed in democracy and the independence of the judiciary and that the elections under the present Election Commission could never be fair and free.
