Police on Wednesday claimed of having killed the notorious dacoit, Mashooq Brohi, in an 'encounter' near Hub. Addressing a hurriedly-called press conference, Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Karachi, Azhar Ali Farooqi said that police in collaboration with officials of CID and other law enforcement agencies (LEAs) killed Brohi after a brief encounter.
Sindh Government had announced a reward of Rs 2.5 million for his arrest. He said on a tip-off that Brohi was present in a hideout on Sakran Road, near Hub, a joint team of police, CID and other LEAs conducted raid on his hideout at 3:30 pm on Wednesday.
CCPO said that as the raiding team of LEAs attempted to arrest the accused, he opened fire with an MP-5 rifle, which was retaliated. After a brief shootout he was arrested, he said, adding no members of the police party was injured in the encounter. Although two women of neighing houses were injured in cross firing, he maintained.
Farooqi said that four accomplices of Mashooq Brohi managed to escape, who were being trailed by the police and would be apprehended soon. The accomplices were identified as Fateh Rind, Lal Khan Rind, Ameer Bukhsh and Wahid Bukhsh Mujeeb Brohi. Mashooq was wanted by Police in more than 40 cases of kidnapping for ransom, murders and other serious natures registered in Sindh and Balochistan.
He was on the top of most wanted list of Police since 2001. Mashooq started his criminal activities in 1995and was never arrested during his whole criminal life, CCPO maintained.
He said that the accused committed crimes mostly in Karachi and interior Sindh and received Rs millions as ransom. To a query Farooqi said that DNA test of the accused would be carried out to remove any doubts regarding his identity. A brother of the accused, who was languishing in jail, would also be called for the identification of Mashooq, he maintained.
