The appointment of the Vice Chancellor of the Federal Urdu University is exptected to be delayed further as the recent meeting of the University Senate has failed to evolve a consensus on the name of the VC.
Sources told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that sharp differences were witnessed amongst the Senate Members in the meeting on the names recommended by the varsity's Search Committee. The meeting of the Senate Committee of Federal Urdu University was held here with Dr Aftab Ahmed Khan, Deputy Chairman Senate in chair.
The Chairman of Higher Education Commission, Professor Atta-ur-Rehman also attended the meeting. The members of the Senate also criticised the search committee's progress as it presented only three names instead of five for consideration. Some Senate's Members held the Search Committee responsible for the inordinate delay in the appointment process, sources said.
They directed the Search Committee to recommend a list of five names for the slot to the Senate as soon as possible, so that the Senate could recommend three names to the Chancellor of the university, the President of Pakistan, sources maintained.
It is noted that the university has been running its business without any permanent institutional head for the last one-and-half years, creating severe academic and managerial flaws in the university matters.
According to the University Ordinance, the Search Committee is responsible for recommending five names for the post of the University Vice Chancellor to the University Senate. The Senate after considering the recommendations of the committee would send three names out of five to the President, who is also the Chancellor of the university.
The Search Committee had recommended only three names- Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Dr Ijaz Rasool and Professor Mehmooda Asghari, the sources said. University officials feared that the appointment of the VC at FUU would be delayed as it the next Senate meeting would be held only after general elections in the country.
