During several visits to Bakra Mandis at the Super Highway and Malir it was noticed that the animal owners worried due to considerable increase in cold by the rain that poured down in the last few days. It had considerably reduced their bargain powers.
"We failed to apprehend the changes in the weather condition as our animals were getting sick and looking dull due to the increasing cold", said a seller adding that "we should have brought doctors for our animals' treatment with us.
"Here we are facing difficulties in finding doctors for animals. If the temperature further falls we will face much more difficulties in saving them from sickness", animal sellers said.
Some of them have won the game as they sold several goats and cows at higher rates. But now they are facing so many difficulties under the open air and lack of required facilities as buyers are coming with the perception of lower rates.
"They know very well that we are helpless and we can't take care of our animals under the open sky and rainy weather. This is winter and the animals are getting sick due to the falling temperature", they said.
Some animal sellers have started strolling the streets of Karachi with their animals because they can't face the transition at the Bakra Mandis, they said. They are compelled to sell their animals at rates cheaper than those that had cost them to reach Karachi with their animals, one of them said.
Nearly two weeks ago, a healthy and well-groomed cow, Bhola was priced at Rs 1,500,000, which was sold at Rs 1,000,000. A standard cow at the Mandi was priced at Rs 35,000 and a goat was at Rs 20,000, they said. Sheep rates are ranging between Rs 6,000-10,000 and camels are available at Rs 20,000-40,000, they said.
