The Sindh Katchi Abadis Authority's (SKAA) project for rehabilitation of katchi abadis's residents is in doldrums as the authority failed to provide temporary shelter to the residents of the areas, where it planned to construct six-storey buildings to provide houses to the slum dwellers.
Sources in SKAA told Business Recorder here on Thursday that rehabilitation project was in jeopardy owing to lack of arrangements on part of the authority to provide temporary shelter to the people residing on the land proposed for construction of the buildings.
"The Sindh government in collaboration with City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has chalked out a plan to construct six-storey buildings at encroached lands to provide better residential facilities to Katchi Abadies residents which would also help eradicate encroachments across the city," they observed.
The authority failed to chalked a plan to provide temporary residence to Katchi Abadis dwellers, due to which they outright refused to vacate their houses established on the proposed land that was approved the rehabilitation project, sources added.
The sources further said that although Governor Sindh has approved the project, the authority is awaiting green signal from the Chief Minister, as CM approval is necessary for executing such project.
They said documentation for seeking CM approval is ready, but execution of construction work is being hit by the non-availability of arrangements for temporary shelter to the dwellers. They said that government was taking serious efforts to rehabilitate more than 12,000 families through projects in its first phase. The construction expenses would be born by builders, for which the government would offer them top two floors of the buildings.
