Convenor of All Pakistan Democratic Movement (APDM), Mahmood Khan Achakzai Friday termed the January 8 polls as unconstitutional saying the movement will not accept the government constituted after the election. Speaking at Meet the Press Programme of Peshawar Press Club (PPC), he said that participation in the upcoming elections means extending legitimacy to the unconstitutional and unlawful election exercise in the country.
"Those taking part in the polls according to present constitution are liable to high treason," added Mr Achakzai. He said that Pakistan has entered defining movement of the history as government is running under constant martial system. Under the National Security Council (NSC) every important issue is being solved by the military generals. "The country is lacking constitution, law and judiciary and only military is playing shots," added the veteran politician.
Mr Achakzai, who is also chairman of Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP), asked the people to take to the streets in the struggle for establishment of the supremacy of constitution, independence of judiciary and elimination of military rule from civilian affairs. He said that since the inception of the country, the powerful military never allowed the supremacy of law and constitution.
He said that Pervez Musharraf declared the state of emergency and sacked judges through promulgation of Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) to secure the office of presidency. However, he saluted 70 percent judiciary for refusal to take oath of allegiance to the military dictator.
In presence of unconstitutional government and subservient judiciary upholding all wrong doings, the situation is not ripe for participation in the polls but for decision on establishment of transparent democracy and military rule. Participation in polls in such kind of situation is treason with the nation.
The rule by few military generals, he said had put the very integrity of the federation at stake. He said that Pakistan belongs to four nations, which are living in their historic areas for centuries. "Pukhtoons, Saraikis, Sindhis and Balochis had been rendered as colonists in the present situation and demanding rights on their own resources," maintained the veteran nationalist.
He called for popular political uprising for restoration of democracy and judiciary on the position of November 2. The struggle, he said is for converting Pakistan into a true democratic country, saying that every citizen believing in the supremacy of constitution, should rise for protection of basic human rights in the country.
The agenda of the movement, he said was very simple that military has no role in the national politics and this should also be the agenda of every Pakistani. "The small nations are interested in breaking the country, but will also not live like slaves," he made it clear. He added that the existence of the country requires a new social contract.
He said that lack of independent judiciary means lack of justice, which pushes the country towards anarchy and calls for going to civil disobedience for the protection of the country.
"The movement is struggling for a democratic system where elected parliament should be the nucleus of power and leaving other institutions to work in their own sphere, which is not achievable through merely participation in polls," he concluded.
