Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Friday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: European stocks ended higher, reversing some of the previous session's sharp losses as energy and utilities stocks rallied and eclipsed fading hopes for another prompt US rate cut after strong inflation data.
Bank of Scotland up 1.2 percent. Citigroup said late on Thursday it plans to rescue $49 billion of SIVs. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares closed 0.43 percent higher, at 1,516.37 points. It dropped 2.4 percent on Thursday, hit by renewed worries over the impact of the credit squeeze on financial institutions.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 7,948.36 points, up 20.05 or 0.25 percent, falling 45.71 points in the week.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5,605.36 points, up 14.45 or 0.26 percent but falling 113.39 points since last Friday.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8,675.86 points, up 17.5 or 0.20 percent, but shedding 123.79 points since last weekend.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 29,664 points, up 29 or 0.10 percent but dropping 426 points in the week.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares fell 1.61 percent to a two-week closing low as investors dumped financial stocks after Moody's Investors Service cut its debt rating on Citigroup. The S&P/ASX 200 index lost 105.9 points to close at 6,491.7. The index fell 163 points or 2.4 percent on the week, its biggest weekly drop since late August.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares closed at a three-month closing low, while the rand and bonds also faltered on renewed disquiet around the US economy and as investors agonised over a possible change in the domestic ruling party's leadership. The All-share index closed at 28,708 points, down 680.65 or 2.32 percent on the day and on the week by 1,682.67 points.
The All Gold index closed at 2,303.09 points, down 50.61 or 2.15 percent, lower on the week by 127.78 points. The Industrial index closed at 20,260.66 points, down 272.1 or 1.33 percent, falling over the week by 837.12 points.
