A fire broke out on a Japanese destroyer anchored in Yokosuka base near Tokyo, injuring four crew members and taking firemen seven hours to extinguish, a Japanese defence official said Saturday.
The fire broke out near the rudder house of the 5,200-ton "Shirane" shortly after ten o'clock Friday evening and was extinguished Saturday morning around five o'clock, he said. Four men were initially taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation and one was discharged later. The lives of the remaining men are not in danger, the official added. A total of 80 men were aboard the warship when the fire broke out, he said.
Police and defence officials were investigating the cause of the fire although they suspect it was caused by an electric fault, Kyodo News reported. News reports said it ravaged the destroyer's combat information centre, which controls the firing of missiles and machine guns.
