Four Chechen rebels and a police officer were killed in an overnight gun battle in the region's capital Grozny, Russian media reported on Sunday.
The group of three men and one women resisted arrest during a search of a residential district of the city on Saturday night sparking a conflict which lasted until early morning on Sunday, the Chechen Interior Minister Ruslan Alkhanov told Interfax. Russian TV showed the apartment on fire and heavily armed troops in the city.
Two of the men had been identified and these were "the leaders of a gang which was involved in murders of police officers in Grozny and elsewhere in Chechnya since the summer of 2007," Alkhanov was quoted as saying by Interfax.
