The committee constituted by the NWFP government for the conversion of 2-stroke rickshaws into 4-stroke has unanimously decided to convert 2-stroke rickshaws into 4-stroke within three months. The committee has further decided to ban on 2-stroke rickshaws to ply on roads of the city after the expiry of the deadline.
The decision to this effect was made in a meeting of the committee held here on Tuesday, NWFP Caretaker Minister for Environment Ijaz Ali Khan, chairman of the committee presided the meeting.
The meeting was attended by City District Nazim Peshawar Haji Ghulam Ali, Secretary Environment Shah Wali Khan, Director Transport, Sajid Khan, President of Rickshaw Union, Amanullah Khan, General Secretary Murad Khan, Manufacturer Muhammad Jahangir Khan and representatives of finance, excise and taxation departments and the Bank of Khyber.
The meeting asked the excise and taxation department in the province for putting ban on the registration of 4-stroke Rickshaws and not to cross the limits laid down by the transport department and district government.
The department should not register any 4-stroke Rickshaws without the no objection certificate (NOC) issued by the provincial department of Transport.
It was decided in the meeting that the Bank of Khyber and other banks would provide loan for converting 2-strike rickshaws into 4-stroke to the rickshaw owners, while provincial government would provide 50 per cent subsidy on loan and mark-up in this regard.
The meeting also decided to abolish all rickshaws workshops established on the big roadside in Peshawar city, while stern action would be taken against the manufacturers of 2-stroke rickshaws across the province.
Addressing on this occasion, Ijaz Ali Khan Durrani said that the process of conversion would make the city pollution free and the owners of rickshaws and public would also be benefited. District Nazim Haji Ghulam Ali said that the district government had already taken solid measures for making Peshawar City a beautiful, green and pollution free.
