Addressing the nation over Radio and TV networks the same night after emergency was lifted,PCO repealed and the 1973 Constitution restored after some more amendments were incorporated in it.
President Pervez Musharraf reiterated his commitment to hold the general election in a free, fair, transparent and orderly manner as scheduled on January 8,was critical of those parties which had resorted to the extreme step of boycotting the polls without any justification whatsoever and also of those who were crying hoarse "rigging, rigging" while election are yet to be held.
Though the Constitution has undergone further amendments within last few days, the restriction on a person becoming prime minister for the third term of five years has not been removed. As such, both PPP Life Chairperson Benazir Bhutto and {PML(N) Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif, as of present continue to be debarred from becoming the Prime Minister for the third time.
But still both the former prime ministers, who served two stints each between 1988 to 1999,are under some illusions as they are announcing they would work or not work as the prime minister with Pervez Musharraf as the civilian president even.
This seems they are short sighted about the ground realities. And, a few words to the boycotters of the upcoming general election who have preferred to avoid venturing into the election arena and facing the electorate.
You have resorted to an undemocratic step of boycotting the polls on one account or the other. This is your own decision while others are contesting the election in right earnest.
But in all fairness, you cannot impose your decision on others by launching what is being termed as a movement to persuade the people to boycott the polls. This is quite unfair, undemocratic and also falling within the framework of law and order situation.
If you want to boycott the election, please do so but let others contest the polls according to their own wishes and do not impose your point of view on others.
